Dr. Lavoie was born and raised in Woonsocket, RI of French-Canadian parents and grandparents. After graduating from high school in three years, a career in research was planned. After majoring in biology and psychology at Rhode Island College Dr. Lavoie went on to a NSF Research Fellowship at Brown University, Providence, RI. It was during that time that she decided that she preferred direct patient care to laboratory research.

In 1979 Dr. Lavoie left Rhode Island to attend New York University School of Dentistry. Following graduation in 1983, "Dr. Sue" entered practice in Cranston, RI. Since then Dr. Lavoie has done extensive research on Temporo Mandibular Disorders (TMJ) at SUNY, Buffalo, NY, and completed a Masters of Public Health from Boston University in 1996. Most recently, Dr. Lavoie practiced in association with Drs. Bruce Belvin and James Reynolds in Warwick, RI. She is currently licensed to practice in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York.

Dr. Lavoie's interest in research assists her today in evaluating research for new drugs, materials, and dental therapies. Her other interests are geriatrics, treatment of handicapped patients and screening for oral cancer. That screening, by the way, should be part of every dental exam.
